University of Leeds NEXUS wins RIBA award
Awards
We are delighted to announce that the NEXUS building, an innovation hub designed to act as a catalyst for regional development has been recognised by the RIBA.
We acted as project manager and principal designer on the ERDF and LEP supported scheme that is designed to attract local industry and innovative start-ups on campus. The £42 million facility the University of Leeds to meet their strategic objective of increasing income from research and establishing themselves as UK-leading in innovation and enterprise. Conceived as a business facing front door for the university, it provides a high-profile physical focal point for stimulating collaboration between external companies and other public/private organisations leading to new projects and income streams.
Of the project the RIBA said: "Instead of being a ‘university’ space it is a neutral professional place. Bold in its design, Nexus does not impose itself on its surroundings and sits harmoniously within the university’s wider masterplan. Constructed using an in-situ concrete frame and glulam roof, it respects the topography of the site to deliver a sleek, contemporary design."
Our project lead Stephen Abbott, Divisional Director said, "Nexus is a major scheme for the university and the region. We're proud to have supported the University throughout the project, troubleshooting a number of key elements and offering a proactive service that protected them from risk well beyond project completion. We're delighted that the facility has been recognised by the RIBA. Our aspiration that it will have a lasting impact of curriculum and opportunities for businesses to integrate with the university."
