Drees & Sommer were appointed to support the Lowry with the preparation of a detailed options appraisal and feasibility design study for the hospitality, restaurant, and bars areas of the Arts Centre, to update and improve access and utilisation of these spaces.

A key focus of the study was to establish how the Lowry could create improved links with Media City. The study also provided a full analysis of energy efficiency and improvement measures that could be implemented to reduce running costs, along with an analysis of the arts and theatre equipment upgrade requirements to be submitted to meet the Arts Council of England Funding criteria.

Following a successful funding application, Drees & Sommer were appointed to coordinate and support the delivery of the works comprising a redevelopment of the existing restaurant and bar areas, the ground floor level of the Hexagon Tower and the external public realm spaces. The plan responds to the commercial needs of the organisation whilst being both a sympathetic and striking interaction with the original architecture of the building.

The vision for the newly designed spaces is of a ‘destination within a destination’.

In summary, this work would provide:

New entrance from The Lowry Plaza directly into a redeveloped bar area in the Hexagon Tower in order to engage with increased footfall on Salford Quays/MediaCityUK
A larger redeveloped and more flexible Terrace Bar space to allow The Lowry to develop their offer and increase revenue
A unified and more intimate restaurant area, utilising existing external terrace spaces to connect with MediaCityUK and to create an attractive offer for users of the site
Additional multi-purpose private event spaces
