NHS Birmingham & Solihull ICS is a collaborative partnership that has been set up to develop joined-up care out of hospital settings. The partnership aims to deliver improved access to local services for everyone when their need is urgent, and more supportive and consistent care for those who need more support including social care.

Drees & Sommer have been working across hospitals and the primary care network to develop a joined-up system of hospital services through Birmingham and Solihull, improving estate efficiency and joint working. Following our successful production of an Estate Strategy Checkpoint for the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care system, Drees & Sommer provided the Interim Programme Director role for the ICS estates function.

Drees & Sommer has developed key alliances across the healthcare and Local Authority organisations to ensure that across the Birmingham and Solihull the estate functions operate more effectively both strategically and operationally.

We have implemented a streamlined governance structure, which has simplified reporting and increased output delivery across the system. A singular Strategic Estates Board, with agreed membership from each of the NHS organisations, Local Authorities, property companies and NHSEI/I has been created and empowered to make strategic estates decisions.

Workstream sub-groups, covering disposals and void management, projects & capital delivery and efficiencies and backlog maintenance, have also been created and are exploring new and strategic solutions to long-standing estates issues.

In order to meet the wider needs of the ICS, we went above and beyond the scope of the role and worked pro-bono for John Taylor Hospice, on their project to improve end-of-life care and provided advisory services to Lozelles Primary School, to better utilise their estate and support the provision of a community centre.
